Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed acknowledged that his sister-in-law was a plaintiff in a 2016 lawsuit over her placement on the federal terrorist watchlist, an exchange that comes days before former President Barack Obama is set to campaign with him.

Where I live, the watchlist is a punchline and a lottery. You get flagged for sharing a name with a guy in Cleveland, then spend years proving you’re not him. So the candidate’s in-law suing over it days before Obama shows up to bless him? Sure. Nothing says change like a photo op stapled to a lawsuit. The list is garbage, the timing is comedy, and we’re all standing in the wrong airport line.
