Painting a resource center and clearing a garbage site on one Saturday, and everyone calls it progress. Meanwhile the trash keeps coming back to the same river banks the next week, because nobody fixes the reason it piles up there in the first place. Where I live, a “Day of Service” means volunteers doing the work the government was paid to do, then getting a photo op for it.
