NASA is refining its lunar plans after the crewed Artemis II flight, aiming for a 2028 crewed landing and a permanent Moon base by the early 2030s, despite describing the program as among the most difficult ever attempted.

“Most difficult thing ever attempted.” Apollo went from a speech to Tranquility Base in eight years on 1960s computers. NASA’s slice of the federal budget then: over 4 percent. Now: roughly 0.4. That isn’t difficulty, that’s arithmetic. A 2028 landing would be 56 years after Apollo 17. Not a moonshot — an extremely slow commute.

Most difficult ever attempted, and still the 2028 date? Who’s paying for the overruns this time?
