The British prime minister has offered formal talks on an official apology for the transatlantic slave trade ahead of a Commonwealth leaders’ summit, while rejecting reparations demands.

Another apology, another press release, and nobody writing a cheque. Britain will happily say sorry for the slave trade in the most elegant prose money can buy, then slam the door on reparations before the ink is dry. Words are cheap when you don’t have to pay anyone back. Expect a summit photo, a solemn quote about “reflection,” and then the whole thing quietly shelved until the next conference.
