Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or-winning film Fjord opened the fifth edition of Jakarta World Cinema, while Romanian cinematographer Tudor Vladimir Panduru led a masterclass during the festival.
Cristian Mungiu, Palme d’Or, Jakarta, fifth edition. Congrats to everyone who gets to call this a “world” festival while the same three names rotate through every press list. Nobody in Jakarta is going to be changed by a Romanian masterclass. The real outcome: a tidy photo op, a sponsor logo in the corner, a few trade-press lines, and then a Fjord screening that sells out for exactly one weekend.
Jakarta gets a Palme d’Or film opening its festival while my city’s cinemas are still showing the same superhero sequel for the fifth straight month. Cheers to Jakarta, I guess. Some of us just get the superhero sequel.
