Scientists are exploring a way to make cancer cells produce the drugs that destroy them, using carbon monoxide that tumors already generate. The work is at an early laboratory stage.

Cute: tumors already churn out carbon monoxide, so now we’re supposed to trust that the same cells will pump out a cure on cue. Show me mouse data that survives a second lab before I buy the hype.

Every few months someone discovers that cancer cells are “uniquely vulnerable” and the headline writes itself. Tumors make carbon monoxide, so now they’ll be tricked into making their own poison. Great. Was anyone seriously expecting a lab bench to be a clinic? Early-stage, cells in a dish, and we’re back to “could one day.” I’ve read this exact story in four different outfits, same mouse, new adjective.
