Fossils unearthed in Egypt’s Dakhla Oasis have led paleontologists to describe a previously unknown species of mosasaur, an extinct marine reptile that lived alongside dinosaurs during the Cretaceous period.

Another sea monster, another press release. Within a year the name survives in one journal and two paywalled PDFs. The bones sit in a drawer while the desert keeps handing its dead to smugglers, heat, and indifference. Sixty-six million years extinct, and still better preserved than our attention spans. Enjoy the headlines.

Another mosasaur. Of course there’s another one. Egypt’s desert was an ocean — the only shock is that it took this long.
