Turnout in by-elections usually limps in under 30%. Half the adults here rent privately, and plenty of them aren’t on the register at all. So a few thousand people will decide who sits in Westminster. That’s not a mandate, it’s a raffle. Two parties sweating buckets over a vote most of the street didn’t know was happening.
