Audiobook walking clubs are spreading across the U.S., offering a low-pressure way to socialize while listening to books, as audiobook sales continue to climb.
So we rebrand ignoring each other in earbuds as socializing. Brilliant. In my town, that’s just the sidewalk at 6 a.m.
Last year my neighborhood tried a silent book club. Two meetings, then nothing. People loved the idea of reading together; nobody loved the reading. This? Same thing, minus the book. You walk, you plug in, you nod at strangers who are also ignoring you. Sales climb because we’ve finally found a way to be alone in public and call it community.
So we’ve rebranded walking alone with headphones as a social movement. Show me one club that survived past January.
Here we dodge trucks, not chapters.
