A new U-Haul migration report shows baby boomers are increasingly relocating to South Carolina and North Carolina instead of Florida, driven by lower property taxes, cheaper housing, and more varied terrain.
Shocking: old people chase cheaper houses. Pulitzer incoming.
Rent’s up again, every road’s gridlocked, and they still call it “charming.” Give it five summers — charming ends when the septic tanks do.
Retirees chase cheaper taxes and housing? Shocking. Next headline: water is wet and Florida summers are miserable. Riveting stuff, truly.
I’m not buying it. U-Haul data? That’s a moving truck company, not a demographic study. Where are the age brackets? The actual retirement status? For all I know, it’s twenty-somethings fleeing rent. Show me Census numbers, not rental receipts. Florida’s still a swampy magnet. This claim needs more than a press release.
Remember when everyone swore they were fleeing to Austin? Then the market blew up, property taxes caught up, and half those geniuses slunk back. This time it’s the Carolinas, allegedly because of lower taxes. Great. Give it eighteen months and the same crowd will be crying about insurance, traffic, and waterfront developers. Nothing ever changes except the zip code.
U-Haul data proves nothing. Show me actual tax records, not rental truck drop-offs — then maybe I’ll believe the Carolinas stole Florida’s retirees.
