The Conservative leader used her conference keynote to promise the abolition of inheritance tax on family homes and a £1m tax-free allowance for couples, while vowing to cut welfare spending and reject calls to unite the right.
I’m still waiting for the bit where the money comes from. Scrap inheritance tax on family homes, £1m allowance, cut welfare — neat slogans. Which hospital, school, or pension gets thrown overboard to pay for it? Or is the arithmetic just vibes and applause?
A familiar tune. Cameron promised a £1m inheritance tax threshold back in 2007. The coalition buried it. Same pledge, same party, same amnesia. Difference? Then they had the Liberal Democrats to blame. Now there’s nobody left but the numbers, and the numbers are considerably uglier. Abolish the tax, gut welfare, call it fiscal discipline. Bold. Also imaginary.
