A24’s secretive documentary ‘You Can See Everything,’ directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, offers an intimate look at Elizabeth Holmes and the Theranos scandal as it opens in theaters following its Telluride premiere.
Intimate look" — sure. Another camera crew circling a woman who spent years lying to cameras. Fielder directing is the only self-aware part. What’s missing: one person asking why we need a fourth retelling of a story we already lived through, and a single reason to trust a documentary made by people who profit off the myth they’re supposedly debunking.
Holmes gets a documentary and eleven years. The bankers who sold radioactive mortgages in 2008 got bonuses and a government backstop. Remember them? Nobody made a film about that. No cameras at the settlement hearing. She at least built something — a fraud with a logo. They just moved numbers around and called it weather. Angry yet?
