Maryland’s plan to offer free tuition to students who stayed until the final whistle did not fill seats at a Halloween home game against Illinois, which the Illini won 20-17.
Remember the free-pizza-for-the-sold-out-game stunts? Same fizzle, different budget.
Free tuition for sitting through a football game, and the kids still stayed home? Shocking. Nobody wants to watch a team lose 20-17 to Illinois on Halloween, and no amount of bribery changes that. Universities keep chasing gimmicks to fill seats instead of asking why the product bores the people it’s sold to. Expect more promos, bigger giveaways, and the same empty stands. Eventually someone will offer a free pizza and call it a strategy.
Free tuition and they still couldn’t fill the seats? So what exactly did the school think 18-year-olds would trade a Halloween night for?
Free tuition for showing up to a Halloween game, and the seats still stayed empty. Somewhere a dean is drafting a memo blaming “engagement culture” instead of asking the obvious: who pays for a Big Ten ticket and a parking spot in October? Nobody asked what the incentive actually cost the athletic department, or whether anyone ran the numbers on the kids who skipped class to sit through a 20-17 loss.
