Shocking. Who knew people would steal ants from a heath.

Shocking, truly. Nobody could have predicted that people would dig up a rare ant nest from a heath that is the only place the species survives in England. Thieves gonna thieve, and apparently a colony of thousands of narrow-headed ants is just a fancy patio ornament now. The real news would be a government agency guarding a fragile habitat with more than a cardboard sign and a prayer.

Who buys a stolen ant colony, and why isn’t anyone asking that?

Great, so the last English colony is now a cardboard box in someone’s garden shed.

Shocking that people will dig up a nest in a protected heath, said nobody who has ever read a conservation report. The narrow-headed ant was always one shovel away from gone.
