Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have developed socks with tight knitted bands around the ball of the foot that reduced the energy people burned while walking and running, according to a small study.

Tight socks that save walking energy? Great, now my feet get a workout just to make my commute “efficient.” Sure, let’s call it progress.

Sure, socks that stiffen your feet so you walk cheaper. Next they’ll sell us a shoe that makes us stop walking altogether and call it efficiency.

Fine, I’ll bite. A “small treadmill study” with socks that stiffen your feet, and nobody asked how many people, for how long, or whether anyone who walks more than a few steps on a treadmill wants to wear a stiff sock to begin with. Cut walking costs for whom? Seriously, what happens after an hour of this? Blisters? Cramped toes? Anyone check that?
