Gov. Gavin Newsom is discussing whether to commute the death sentences of all 563 inmates on California’s death row, a move that would leave them serving life in prison without the possibility of release.
Discussing" means leaking to test the waters. Show the actual order, the list, the legal reasoning — until then it’s a fundraising email.
Commuting 563 death sentences means 563 lifetimes of appeals, medical bills and cable TV — all on our dime. The row becomes a retirement home. Victims’ families get a form letter and a shrug. And the moment a new governor sits down, somebody sues to reverse it. Nothing closes. Nothing settles. Just a headline, then the invoice.
Predictable as sunrise. Yet somehow breaking news.
Where I live, the county can’t fund a fifth prosecutor, court dates slip two years out, and a stolen truck gets a shrug. Now imagine 563 permanent residents getting upgraded to life without parole. That’s not mercy, that’s a rebranding. Death row with better cable and a gym schedule. Funny how the budget always appears for the guys who never leave.
