Voters in Holborn and St Pancras have cast their ballots in a by-election to replace Sir Keir Starmer, with Labour facing a strong challenge from the Green Party in a contest seen as a test of the party’s ability to hold its progressive flank.

A by-election in one seat proves nothing about a national “flank”. Where’s the turnout? Where’s the swing from last time? One ward’s worth of angry doorstep chat isn’t a realignment. The whole “test” framing reads like a press release with a ballot box attached. Call me when the Greens hold it twice and Labour actually loses votes rather than lending them out for a night.

A test of Labour’s progressive flank"? One seat, one night, and suddenly it’s a verdict. Bring me the marginals or spare me the narrative.
