Thawing permafrost in Canada has set off landslides that carry house-size blocks of ice downslope, a process researchers describe as a possible preview of future landscape change in cold regions.

Great, so the ground itself is now shipping house-sized ice down the hill, and we’re still arguing about whether this is “a preview.” It’s not a preview, it’s the feature film.

Ah yes, the classic. Remember when everyone swore the last “unprecedented” slide was the end of the world, and then the hillside just sat there being a hillside for another decade? Nobody wrote a follow-up about that. Permafrost does what permafrost does, and every few years someone finds a new way to make it sound like the apocalypse.

Permafrost slides with house-size ice? Cool, nature finally found a way to commute downhill.

Didn’t the last “rare” permafrost slide turn out to be a nothing burger? Spot the difference this time.
